Doctor Who Showrunner, Steven Moffat, has a tall order on his hands. Peter Capaldi has appeared not only in Torchwood, but also in Doctor Who. So exactly how is he going to work this out?
If nothing else, Steven Moffat is a man with a plan, a cryptic one, but a plan nonetheless. In a 30-minute interview with Officially Nerd Cubed, he explains some of his thought process.
Highlights include the following:
- 2:00 To the surprise of no one Moffat dislikes Tumblr. In fact he wonders if the Internet comes with an off switch.
- 4:15 The Tardis is like a roving party animal – not so much a morality and mending box.
- 8:00 Why the Doctor and Tardis keep choosing Earth.
- 10:00 Why the companions can have more of a clue than the Doctor.
- 12:00 Did the Silence cause the downfall of the Silurians? Is it a parasitic or a symbiotic relationship, or is it just a handy canon fixer?
- 14:00 The perils of the deadlock seal
- 15:00 Regeneration in the reboot era vs. the classic era. Just how resilient is the Doctor to falls, radiation, etc?
- 17:00 Are Peter Capaldi’s previous Whovian universe experiences reflected? Moffat states that Russel T. Davies actually had a plan and Steven Moffat has license to borrow it. Where the Doctor gets his faces of regeneration is explored: it’s not just random.
- Why isn’t the Doctor a woman. “You don’t just cast ‘a woman’ any more than you cast ‘a man’. It’s a specific person each time.”
- 20:00 How does Moffat feel about others using his monsters like the Weeping Angels. He may be done with them, but he wants others to use them. Do moths stop Angels? How about CCTV cameras?
- 25:00 Watching demographics. More than half watch it not when it airs but later on via the iPlayer. Their re-watchability factor is huge. 77 million watch it.
- 28:00 The advantages of a 360 degree Tardis.
- 29:00 The fine art of knowing when to change the tone, and what sets it apart from other fantasy shows including itself.
On top of Steven Moffat’s interview today, we have learned that Peter Capaldi is going to use his natural, Scottish accent when he takes over the role. Fellow Scot, and former Doctor, David Tennant, couldn’t resist taking a jabbing tease at Capaldi . According to the Mirror, Tennant stated, “I just think it’s lazy.”
