Spyro Reignited Trilogy will force those that rely on physical discs because of poor internet connections to still download the other two Spyro games.
This is an unfortunate scenario that hopefully doesn’t show a growing trend in the gaming industry. While some games do require you to download updates before you can play their latest version (or at times, even boot up the game), this is one of the first times a major game is releasing without the majority of its content written on the physical disc.
On the matter, PlayStation Lifestyle was told by Activision the following: “As with most games today, downloading an update after purchase is quite common. The language on packaging and on the web is to let players know the requirements for Spyro Reignited Trilogy.”
There is speculation that the reason the two other games aren’t included is that the second two titles are still being worked on by the dev team, likely right up to release of the game. At that, it would be impossible to include the final builds of the second and third games on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy disc.
The games included in the remastered Spyro Reignited Triology include Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, all originally for the PlayStation 1. The game releases on September 21, 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The hype behind the Spyro Reignited Trilogy has been pretty intense since its announcement, bringing a lot of pressure for Activision to deliver great ports of these PlayStation classics. With that much intensity behind a project, Activision is likely putting all of their energies behind getting Spyro Reignited Triology out on the originally announced release date.
While it may be too late to make this decision, it would have been better to delay the game if it meant that all of the games on the box would actually be on the physical disc.
