Universal is considering a sequel to the 2011 smash hit Bridesmaids, but it looks like it will be without SNL superstar Kristen Wiig.
According to THR, Wiig has no plans to do a sequel to Bridesmaids and is in fact working on a different script with Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo.
Kristen tells THR:
“We aren’t working on that. Annie and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.”
THR is also reporting that things with Wiig and Universal might be sour after each of the 6 principal cast members were only given $100,000 bonuses – a small figure considering the film had a $30 million budget and grossed over $288 million worldwide. THR asked Wiig about the situation and she declined to comment.
It does seem that Bridesmaids 2 is a go as long as the right story emerges:
“We are over the moon with the success of Bridesmaids, and if we do a sequel we want to get it right,” a Universal rep tells THR. “We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we’ll move forward.” The studio rep declines to elaborate on what elements it would deem essential — whether, for example, original director Paul Feig would be involved — but Universal is focused on McCarthy as a key player to get a sequel rolling.
