Sherlock series three is just about to get started, and already we’re learning that Sherlock series four is a go!

At an awards ceremony today in London, star Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that he and co-star Martin Freeman have signed on for a fourth season:

“We’ve agreed to two more series but I’m probably going to get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three and another three.”

The news will come as a relief to fans who may be worried that the recent surges in both Cumberbatch’s and Freeman’s careers could jeopardize future series. There’s also the looming concern of the show simply ending because most British television programs do not run for many series.

Cumberbatch made clear he hopes it continues beyond a series four, too. “It just depends on Martin and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven [Moffat’s] ability. I’d love to keep it going.”

Yesterday Cumberbatch and Freeman reunited for the first time to begin work on Sherlock series 3. BBC One’s official Twitter account snapped a fun photo of the two at the first table read where they went through series three, episode one’s script.

Thanks to Radio Times who spoke to Mr. Cumberbatch today.
