The upcoming Sherlock special is scheduled to begin filming in the new year, and today producer Sue Vertue unveiled a first look at the stars in their roles.
Early this morning Vertue teased that a table read was taking place on Tuesday ahead of filming in early 2015:
This is what we've been doing today! Later on a pic of Sherlock and John as they'll appear in the Special #221back pic.twitter.com/Aq4vncKpKy

A couple hours later Vertue shared this photo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman wearing top hats, and the latter sporting a mustache. She included the hashtag “#notkidding,” presumably meaning this is what they’ll look like in the Sherlock special:
The Sherlock special is rumored to air around Christmas 2015 just before series 4 premieres at the start of 2016.
Filming on series 4 is expected to take place later in the year. Said creator Steven Moffat in a press release in July, “A special, plus a new series of three episodes – it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect…”
We don’t know anything else about the special, other than that Freeman previously described it as “mouth-watering.”
