Shanghai Dawn may be coming more than 13 years following the previous installment, but the addition of a director means it’s finally well underway.
Shanghai Noon debuted in 2000 and was a surprise hit for Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, who teamed up as an Imperial guard and cowboy, respectively, to rescue the captured Chinese princess.
Combining action and comedy in equal measure, the movie was a genre-bending success.
In 2003, Shanghai Knights saw the return of the duo, but this time they ended up in London to avenge the death of Chon Wang’s (Chan) father.
So imagine our surprise when we heard that a third movie, Shanghai Dawn is not only in the works, but now has a director attached to the project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jared Hess (the guy who directed Napoleon Dynamite) is set to helm the threequell for MGM.
Chan and Wilson are also in talks to return to the franchise. In fact, it seems like the whole team is getting back together, as the story will be by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who wrote the previous two films.
This time around, there’s some new blood in the water, however, as Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum have written the script.
Millar and Gough will also be executive producing, so rest assured that this film will likely still feel like the first two, despite the large gap in time.
No details have been released regarding the plot of Shanghai Dawn, but it doesn’t feel like much of a leap to expect the duo to hit up a new location and get into some ridiculously hilarious trouble.
Millar and Gough, who have worked on a variety of projects together, are also involved in MTV’s Shannara Chronicles and AMC’s Into the Badlands, both of which will be seeing a second season sometime next year.
