Selfie season 1, episode 8 aired last night: that’s right, the remaining six episodes of the cancelled ABC sitcom will be released online!
Starting this week, Hulu and ABC.com will be streaming the last six remaining episodes of Selfie. Following the show’s cancellation, fans have petitioned to bring back the series – and while a renewal likely isn’t in the cards, at least we’ll get to finish out the 13 episode season.
Selfie season 1, episode 8 is titled “Traumatic Party Stress Disorder.” Watch it now on Hulu, then come back and share your thoughts!
Here’s why the episode was awesome, and why ABC made a terrible decision to cancel the show:
1. Henry has actual fun
The episode saw Henry (John Cho) celebrate his 40th birthday, and in true Henry fashion, his plan was to stay in and watch a documentary. But Eliza (Karen Gillan) takes it upon herself to not just get him a personal gift, but to force him to have fun.
Henry and Julia (Allison Miller) go to a Blues Traveler concert, where Henry has a blast with his new friend Wayne – and we’ve never loved him more. It’s also neat to see the iconic band on the show – thanks to Elle Latham for pointing this out in the comments.
2. Charmonique sings
Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a gem, and Selfie is making the best possible use out of the Broadway star. The episode opens with her singing a spectacular “Happy Birthday” song for Henry, while looking hilariously annoyed at having to do so.
3. Freddy gets a personality
That’s right, Eliza’s booty call Freddy (Giacomo Gianniotti) not only has lines this week, but also a personality. He goes on a rant about Tom Cruise, and admits to loving Edge of Tomorrow, and then helps Eliza plan Henry’s surprise party.
4. Henry and Julia are awkward and hilarious
Indulging in a bit of “birthday joshing,” Henry and Julia prove that they are in fact the exact same person, and their interactions continue to crack us up.
Julia is clearly the more neurotic of the two, which we imagine will eventually cause their breakup (if the show gets that far). But until then, we’ll continue to enjoy her extreme awkwardness as she tries to loosen up.
5. Eliza throws an office-themed party
What a great idea from the writers’ side, to have the characters recreate the office at Henry’s house. Joan (Jennifer Hasty) and Saperstein (David Harewood) provided some of the funniest exchanges, while Charmonique had to stand behind her fake receptionist desk.
Plus, Raj (Nikhil Pai)? Where’s he been?! That guy is hilarious. We only saw him once before, in season 1, episode 3, “A Little Yelp From My Friends,” and sadly he wasn’t scheduled to appear again until after the winter break. Still, we’ll take what we can get.
6. The episode has significant emotional weight
It always comes back to Henry and Eliza’s growing friendship, and this week was no exception: when Henry orders everyone to leave his house, Eliza sheds actual human tears as she remembers her own lonely birthday party as a child.
And this, along with Julia’s arrival at his house, allows Henry to realise that Eliza really was trying to do a good thing.
Then, of course, he goes viral – much to Eliza’s amusement.
Selfie season 1, episode 9 will be released next Tuesday on Hulu and ABC.com. The series finale will be episode 13, which we desperately hope will offer some kind of resolution.
