It’s a new era for Lisbeth Salander in the new trailer for The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and in said trailer, things get explosive.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie franchise is rebooting, and there’s a lot of change happening. The story behind The Girl in the Spider’s Web is based on the first book not written by the series’ original author, Stieg Larsson. A new director is stepping in, and a new Lisbeth Salander is taking over, replacing Rooney Mara for The Crown‘s Claire Foy. And while some were initially skeptical about this new era of everyone’s favorite badass hacker and vigilante, the latest trailer proves that change might just be a good thing.
The second trailer released for The Girl in the Spider’s Web plays heavy on the action, and while it’s definitely a different feel than 2011’s David Fincher-helmed film, it’s got us curious. Plus, Claire Foy is an absolutely brilliant actor, winning both Emmys and Golden Globes for her time as Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s The Crown, and she seems to take to the role of hacker and badass pretty naturally in this new trailer.
This movie gives us a fascinating look into the backstory of Lisbeth Salander, and some of the formative events that shaped her into the person we know today. Namely, we get to meet Lisbeth’s sister Camilla, a woman Lisbeth was unable to protect from a man who wished to do her harm.
Of course, in the midst of that family drama, Lisbeth and her journalist friend Michael Blomkvist also encounter a tangled web of cybercriminals, corrupt government officials, and more that they will have to untangle. So while this might be a new era for Lisbeth Salander and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo franchise, the heart of what makes us love Lisbeth–her ragged search for justice for those women hurt by men in power and her amazing ability to expose corruption–is still there.
We’ll have to wait to see the movie to get a true feel for Foy’s run as Lisbeth Salander, and how this new movie compares to the Rooney Mara-led movie. Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long, as The Girl in the Spider’s Web premieres in theaters on November 9.
