Are you getting pumped for Scream season season 2, but don’t have time to rewatch the whole season? Don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

If you do want to pick up Scream season 1, it’s out on DVD right now and it’s also ready to be streamed on Netflix. Not to mention to can catch it on MTV’s website, too.

But if that’s not convenient enough for you, I’ve got a breakdown of where we left all our favorite characters by the time season 1 came to a close.

Victims

There are two important aspects of the Scream franchise, and those are self-referential jokes and lots of bloodshed. If you want to revel in the former, I suggest rewatching, but if you’re here for the latter, you’re in luck.

Our first kills were of minor characters, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have a lasting impact. In fact, it was Nina’s death that kicked off the series. After enjoying a little time in the hot tub, she was chased down and slashed, only to be dumped back into the water. At this point we also knew her on-again-off-again boyfriend Tyler had been decapitated by the killer, but that revelation came much later in the show for the characters.

Rachel’s death was also minor compared to many of the others, but her murder is still not sitting right with me. It was the only one made to look like a suicide, and the only one that feels like it didn’t quite belong. It’s doubtful that Audrey killed her, but if it was Piper, then why would Audrey continue working with her? What was the real motive behind her murder?

After these three initial deaths, big characters started to fall left and right. First it was Riley, one of Emma’s best friends and Noah’s newly discovered love interest. She died slowly atop the roof of the sheriff’s station while Noah had to listen to her taking her last breath.

Will came next after multiple touch and go moments. His was certainly one of the most disturbing kills on the show, having been cut in half with a trencher right in front of Emma’s eyes. Tripping over a wire sent the machine crawling forward, so if the killer was going for maximum guilt, she achieved it. Not to be outdone, the Sheriff’s death mirrored Will’s in that Emma’s mother was the one to cause his final demise when she untied him from the tree, causing his guts to spill out into her arms.

Lastly, we have Piper, who was shot once by Audrey and again by Emma in the finale after revealing herself as the killer. It’s doubtful she’s still alive, considering her wounds, but they never did find a body.

Survivors

Luckily for us, Survivor Girl wasn’t the only one to live on after Piper was taken down. She and her mom escaped with a few good scrapes, and now they’ll both have to rebuild their lives after everything that’s happened to them. They’re both probably feeling an insane amount of guilt, but what more can you do other than accept what’s happened in the past and then try to move on from it all?

Next we have Audrey and Noah, both of whom lost someone to the masked murderer. The difference is that it looks like Audrey was the killer’s accomplice, and Noah probably won’t be able to stop himself from digging deeper. Now we’re left wondering how far Audrey will go to cover up her secrets, especially if they’re discovered by her best friend.

Jake and Kieran have looked pretty suspicious for the entirety of Scream season 1, but while they’re probably still hiding their fair share of secrets, they don’t seem to be psychopaths. After all, Kieran lost his dad to the killer and Jake barely survived a one-on-one encounter with the Lakewood murderer. Then again, you never really know what will come about on a show like Scream.

Brooke is the final main character to have survived the ordeal, but her life just got a whole lot more complicated. Branson has been set free on account of him not being the murderer, but who knows if he’ll be sticking around. We also found out that Brooke’s mom is still alive and actually in rehab, but that doesn’t change the fact that her father, the mayor, covered up an accidental death. It’s all on tape, and he’ll likely be paying the price for that little indiscretion.

What’s next?

With Scream season 2 only days away, the mystery and anticipation is constantly building. We have some information about what’s next for our heroes, but they’re obviously keeping the juicy parts a secret for as long as they can.

We’ve already met some new characters who will have a role in this season’s murder and mayhem, and a trailer and the seven-minute cold open provide our first looks at what’s to come.

It seems the promotional material is focused on two aspects of the show in particular. The first is, of course, that Audrey had some connection with Piper and someone found out her secret. She’s now getting harassed much like Emma was in the first season. Back in September, the showrunners talked about what it’s like toeing the line between making Audrey a villain and still having her be a sympathetic character. Clearly she has something to hide, but she didn’t come out of last year’s events unscathed, either.

The second aspect is the fallout from season 1, and particularly its effect on Emma. She’s back in Lakewood now, but how has she changed because of what she’s witnessed? Is it possible she’s cracked? Will her relationships be the same, or will she never be able to trust anyone ever again? When the murders start back up again, you have to wonder how long it’ll be until she goes completely mental. One person can only take so much carnage.

Scream season 2 has to take on the monumental task of one-upping their freshman season, and doing so under new direction. That’s right, we’re getting new showrunners for season 2, which has the possibility of going either way. On the one hand, it could add a new spark, but on the other, it could feel like a departure from the first season.
