Scream executive producer Jill Blotevogel breaks down season 1 and teases what’s to come in season 2.
Last night we learned the true identity of the Lakewood killer, so it’s strongly encouraged that if you haven’t seen the Scream season finale, you back out of this article now. There be many spoilers afoot!
Entertainment Weekly had a nice long chat with Jill Blotevogel, executive producer of the Scream series, and they got to the bottom of many questions fans are left wondering.
For example, was Piper always the main contender to be the Lakewood killer? As it turns out, she wasn’t. “There was a lot of discussion about possibilities,” Blotevogel begins. “I always said from the start that I hope there’s a giant board in Vegas with every character and every combination of characters on it where people can place bets the entire run of the show.”
Blotevogel went on to share, “Truthfully, for the first couple of weeks in the writers’ room, we were playing a lot of possibilities and looking at individual killers, looking at potential combinations, looking for the most interesting ways to really figure out who would be taking on the Brandon James persona.”
As for season 2, it looks like the main plot will center around the killer’s partner.
The season finale heavily suggested that Audrey was the prime candidate as Ghostface’s right hand lady. But Blotevogel was hesitant about confirming that fact for sure. What she would admit to though was that Audrey and Piper were definitely connected, “I’m saying that there is undeniable evidence at the end of the finale that she was in contact with Piper. I can’t say too much about what she has done, but we do know that she was complicit in something.”

Whatever part Audrey played in the Lakewood murders it seems like both Blotevogel and actress Bex Taylor-Klaus are interested in exploring her motivations and not just outright making her the villain.
“Audrey is a character who is such a touchstone for the audience. There are so many things about her that we can relate to and empathize with. If she has done bad things, we want to empathize with her and want to understand,” Blotevogel explains. Going into season 2 the executive producer shared that they’ll be exploring questions like, “How much did she do in the past? Why did she do it? What is she going to do in the future? And is she going to be discovered? If we made it too obvious that she was as dark or as psychotic as Piper, you’re going to lose some audience attachment to the character.”
Along with heavy attention paid to Audrey and her connection with Piper, season 2 is going to continue to explore the relationships between the students of Lakewood High.
“One thing that we’re really excited about creatively is being able to dig deeper into these characters and actually see the repercussions of what happened,” says Blotevogel. “What’s nice is we’ve gotten to know these characters and we’re going to pick up with new relationships. Kieran’s getting over the death of his father, Jake (Tom Maden) and Brooke (Carlson Young) have this completely unexpected burgeoning relationship happening. It’s an opportunity that the movies never really had, so I’m excited to see where it’s going to go.”
