MTV is shaking up Scream season 2 by adding new showrunners in the hopes of a strong sophomore run.
Scream season 1 got mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, with some saying it merely attempted to repeat what made the original series so unprecedented some 20 years ago.
The Hollywood Reporter learned that Jill Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia will be stepping down from the series, with Blotevogel continuing on as a consultant.
The fact that Blotevogel will remain as a consultant is good news for fans of the television series, as it will hopefully help maintain a consistent tone as the show switches gears between seasons.
Michael Gans and Richard Register will be the new showrunners for Scream season 2. Though Scream got a renewal before season 1 even finished airing, THR reports that Dimension TV was “unhappy with the creative direction of the revival.”

When we last left our heroes, we learned the true identity of the killers, though Emma and her surviving friends were only aware of one murderer. Unfortunately, as Noah points out in the finale, our known killer couldn’t have been working alone. Realizing who was helping the masked assailant should give the new showrunners plenty of material moving forward.
How else will they take the story in a different direction now that a new creative team is behind the series? THR previously reported Blotevogel saying they’ve entertained the idea of doing the show as an anthology.
While we hope to answer the questions brought up in the finale before the show moves on to another town, we wouldn’t mind seeing the show take on another serial killer in a different city. After all, American Horror Story has done a great job of turning the series into an anthology without making the show feel repetitive.
Whatever happens with Scream season 2, we hope the new showrunners will work with Blotevogel to keep the tone of the show light to honor the original series and the legacy that the Scream franchise has left behind.
