Scott Westerfeld’s Impostors, the first book in a new series set in the Uglies universe, now has its own book trailer!
The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld gave us a world in which everyone was considered ugly until they were made “pretty” through cosmetic surgery. Then, we got to watch what happened when Tally rebelled against society’s conformity.
Now, we’re getting four new books in this same world, all under the title the Impostors Series. An introductory trailer was already released, which you can check out below:
As cool as that was, it didn’t give us a very close look at the first book, which is aptly titled Impostors.
Luckily for you, we’re exclusively revealing the second trailer right now.
“This is the second trailer for IMPOSTORS,” writes Westerfeld. “The first reminded readers about hoverboards, the Smoke, and of course Tally Youngblood. But this trailer looks ahead, to four new books set in the world of Uglies.”
A lot has changed since the first four books: “IMPOSTORS is about Frey, the youngest daughter of a dictator. In the years since Tally’s revolution, the world has grown dangerous. Frey has been raised to mimic her older twin in every way, to act as a body double and bodyguard. She takes Rafi’s place in public appearances, bait for snipers and kidnappers. She’s well trained, but was born expendable.”
Westerfeld continues, saying, “The big theme of YA lit is identity, but Frey has been conditioned to have no identity of her own. She’s a mirror image of her sister, a trick of the light. The trailer’s designer and director, Dorothea Ulrich, uses reflections and symmetries to echo Frey’s life as a doppelgänger. Like the ceiling aquarium in the twins’ luxury hoverlimo, her world is opulent but precarious, rippling with uncertainty. The whole world is hall of mirrors and masks.
“When Frey is handed over as a hostage to another family, collateral for a business deal, she’s able to guide her own destiny for the first time. But what does it mean to live your own life, when you were created as a reflection of someone else?
“If UGLIES was about resisting society’s obsession with beauty, IMPOSTORS is about fighting family mythologies. Parents and siblings may assign us parts to play, but we create ourselves by finding roles of our own.”
It sounds like Impostors is going to be another strong installment in the Uglies series, which will serve a different message inside the same overarching universe. Frey promises to be as strong and as interesting of a character as Tally.
The Impostors hits store shelves on September 11, 2018. Until then, you can pre-order it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound, or add it to your Goodreads list.
