John Goodman has opened up about the sudden firing of Roseanne’s titular star.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times, long-running co-star John Goodman, who will now star in ABC’s upcoming spinoff tentatively titled The Conners, admits that he didn’t necessarily agree with the network’s decision. “I’ll put it this way, I was surprised at the [network’s] response. And that’s probably all I should say about it.”
He also revealed that the firing led him into a month-long battle with depression. Goodman said that when he first heard the news, he told himself, “‘OK, it’s just show business, I’m going to let it go.’ But I went through a period, about a month, where I was very depressed.”
“I’m a depressive anyway, so any excuse that I can get to lower myself, I will. But that had a great deal to do with it, more than I wanted to admit.”
The actor also stood by Barr’s intentions. “I know for a fact that she’s not a racist,” he said.
He also appeared to have revealed how The Conners series will handle Barr’s removal: She’ll be killed. “It’s an unknown,” he responded when asked how Dan will be acting. “I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”
Killing her off might only be a guess, but it’s not a far-fetched idea. If Dan’s return to the show following his heart attack is anything to go by, we know that the show is leaving the door open to bringing her back one day 😉
The Conners will premiere this fall on ABC. According to a synopsis shared by the network:
“After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Landford in a way they never have before. This iconic family — Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky, and D.J. — grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns— with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.”
