Queen’s frontrunner Freddie Mercury is going to be the topic of an upcoming biopic about his life, with Mr. Robot star Remi Malek playing the lead.
This is sort of the best news ever. Malek’s Emmy award-winning turn on Mr. Robot has endeared the incredible actor to the show’s fans, and now plenty of them are getting behind his new project.
According to Deadline, Malek will indeed be playing Freddie Mercury in a movie all about the singer’s life. The film will be called Bohemian Rhapsody.
Producer Graham King has been working on this project for eight years, with both Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Whishaw having been attached at some point or another. Creative differences and a general difficulty getting the film off the ground led it to be delayed.
Now, Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) will be writing the script, with Bryan Singer (X-Men) attached to direct. Singer confirmed the news on Instagram:
Original bandmembers Brian May and Roger Taylor will be music producers on the movie, which definitely gives it the official endorsement a biopic like this needs. The music is already going to be incredible, but with May and Taylor looking our for Mercury’s legacy, there’s no doubt it’s going to be a cut above the rest.
Hopefully this will be the final delay for Bohemian Rhapsody. Filming is supposed to begin early next year, and if all goes according to plan, we should be seeing the finished product soon enough.
