This was it. The moment we all were waiting for. The Quantico season finale revealed whether the NATs could work together to stop the terrorist. Did everyone survive?
The Quantico season finale begins with one hell of a flashback montage. We see literally every single step of Liam’s evil plan to frame Alex from before he ever stepped foot on the grounds at Quantico. We saw him plant evidence on just about everyone in order to keep the finger pointed toward her. The montage ends with him threatening Miranda as she lies shot on the floor just as we left them both at the end of the penultimate episode.
Back at Quantico
The Quantico storyline was pretty much superfluous at this point. It’s graduation day, no one is speaking to each other, but everyone is present that has made it to graduation. We see the NATs pack their belongings and bid farewell to the dorms they’ve called home during their training.
On the last day of training, the NATs turn in their guns, and then have a chance to party. The entire nearby bar is rented out and filled with FBI friends and co-workers for the night. It’s the last chance for the NATs to relax before they begin their assignments and start careers undercover or in the field. Some people dance, Alex and Ryan get into a fight (what else is new), and Shelby tattles on Caleb to keep his parents away from graduation. She needed to get in one last parting shot before beginning her lifelong devotion to pretending he never existed.
And that’s a wrap on Quantico. At least in the past storyline that is.
Present Day
The NATs suspect that Miranda is the culprit, the terrorist, but little do they know the true terrorist literally just walked in the door. Liam shows up at FBI headquarters just in time to point every finger he has at Miranda Shaw. He fools them for like, a minute, but when he disappears to go check on her, Alex notices.
Liam’s had Miranda locked in the trunk of his car in the FBI parking garage while he ran inside to be sure all fingers were pointing at her. Like the badass she is, Miranda fights her way out of the trunk by kicking the back seat down and almost has her cell phone turned on when Liam shows up and knocks her out. She managed to get blood all over his shirt though, making it impossible for him to return to the office, or to look Ryan in the eye when Booth shows up in the garage. Liam takes Ryan hostage as well as Miranda and disappears. We won’t see him again until Alex figures out his grand plan.
Alex’s keen observational skills take her to Liam’s office to see if she can find something to pin all of this on him. His daughter, Luisa, tells her that Liam isn’t supposed to be in NYC at all that weekend, and that he will be in DC the whole time. He sent her to NYC to get her out of the blast zone. He intends to set off a bomb near Washington DC. Alex diverts their efforts to Quantico. What would be more poetic than bombing the upcoming NATs on graduation day. He will shake the foundation of the FBI and if he gets away with framing someone, will be there to help rebuild it.
Simon tells Alex that he suspects the ‘best’ placement for the bomb is in the dorms, as it’s the highest ground and would provide the largest amount of nuclear fallout. He and Reyna run off to keep an eye on the graduation ceremony in progress in case Liam decides to crash it and cause a spectacle.
Alex and Nimah find Ryan and Miranda tied in a dorm room. They free them, and Ryan and Alex run off to find Liam. Liam gets the jump on Ryan on the 6th floor, and gives a long speech about why he chose to set Alex up from the beginning. Ultimately, Alex takes the shot and kills Liam, so now its just the NATs and a bomb. His death seemed a little easy, but with so much to wrap up in the final episode, I guess they just couldn’t devote any more time to Liam’s flair for the dramatic. Ryan’s move with Liam’s gun was pretty stellar though, if I do say so myself.
While all our favorite NATs are himming and hawing over what to do to limit the bomb’s fallout the most, Simon takes the bomb and drives away with it. He’s going to drive the thing into the nearest body of water, eliminating the fallout altogether and saving the lives of everyone in its range, including each and every one of his friends. He stays on the phone as he drives the damn thing away from Quantico and tells Alex and Reyna just how much they mean to him. (Take a second to wipe your tears here. We all cried.) He makes the ultimate sacrifice and drives the bomb off a bridge. It explodes and the fallout is eliminated by the water, just as he said. The mushroom cloud bursts into the air signaling the end of this writer’s favorite NAT. Why did you have to be the hero, Simon?! Why?!
All the NATs gather together to honor Simon at his funeral. It wouldn’t be a gathering if Alex didn’t confront someone, so she gets up in Vice President Haas face about her fake blood pressure problem. Alex knows that she was in on this with Liam, or at least knew what he was doing. She used it for political gain, and Alex intends to make sure she doesn’t get away with it long term.
Miranda is named Deputy Director after Liam’s death, so at least we have that to be happy about.
Alex leaves the FBI, and she and Ryan go on vacay since he has leave hours saved up. After their little vacation, Alex goes back to Oakland, CA to live with her mom, and figure out what is next for her.
A man named Matthew Keyes shows up on Alex’s running route 2 months later. A few of his men open the car door and usher her in. He presents her with a job opportunity with the CIA. He won’t tell her anything more until she decides to take it, and the offer expires the second she leaves the confines of the SUV. Ryan is calling her as she sits there staring at her ringing phone and the business card she holds in her hand. Will she take the offer? Or is Alex off the government payroll for good? We’ll have to wait til the Quantico season 2 premiere to find out.
