Break out your swords! Action Labs’ self-rescuing princess comic, Princeless has been optioned for a movie at Sony.
Could the news coming out of San Diego Comic-Con get any better?
(Spoiler: The answer to that question is yes. Yes it can.)
Deadline broke the news that Sony has optioned the movie rights to the comic series Princeless.
Not familiar with the series? Well, there’s no better time to pick it up and get started.
Princeless was created by writer Jeremy Whitley (Unstoppable Wasp, Secret Empire) and illustrated by by Mia Goodwin (Tomboy, also optioned for an adaptation), Emily Martin (Molly Danger), Rosy Higgins, and Ted Brandt. It follows the story of Princess Adrienne Ashe, a young, Black princess who becomes tired of attempts to rescue her from a dragon guarded tower and decides to free herself.
Teaming up with the aforementioned dragon, and her eventual partner-in-crime Bedelia, a mallet wielding half-dwarf, Princess Adrienne sets out to rescue her six older sisters from their respective towers. What’s not to love?
The series has been nominated for multiple Eisner awards, won numerous others — including Glyphs for Story of the Year, Best Writer and Best Female — and is a firm favorite and well-loved comic amongst fans and critics alike. Not least because it truly has diversity at its heart — in cast, storytelling, and orientation.
In fact, Princeless has been so successful for Action Labs, that it already has a spinoff: Raven: The Pirate Princess. If you’ve ever wanted to read a comic about an Asian, queer pirate captain and her all-female crew, this one is definitely for you.
But what about the Princeless adaptation itself? Stefani Robinson, (Atlanta, Man Seeking Woman, Marvel’s animated Deadpool), has been tapped to write the script. Columbia Pictures’ Michael Sugar (Spotlight) and Ashley Zalta are set to be producers, with Brittany Morrissey overseeing the project for Sony.
With that team rallying behind it, you can bet that the Princeless movie will be just as diverse, empowering, and kick-ass as its comic book counterpart. We’ve been yearning for more female-led movies in the wake of DC’s Wonder Woman, and nothing fits the bill better than Princeless.
There’s no anticipated release date slated for Princeless yet. But you can be sure that we’ll be keeping a close eye on its development.
