Judd Apatow is back in the director’s chair, and he will be partnering with Saturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson on his new project.
Pete Davidson has garnered a lot of fans in his film work and his hilarious run on Saturday Night Live. However, his latest partnership is likely to be a huge and exciting step forward in his career. Davidson is set to star in Judd Apatow’s newest film.
Apatow is known for his unique brand of comedy with movies that lean more towards the raunchy comedy sphere like Knocked Up and movies that have a great deal of heart and emotion behind it like Funny People. His films are always character-driven, and regardless of the comedy style the movie employs, Apatow manages to tell stories that make you laugh and feel.
However, Apatow hasn’t directed a new movie since his 2015 film Trainwreck. As The Hollywood Reporter says, Apatow is returning to the director’s chair, and he’ll be working with Pete Davidson in his new movie.
Davidson co-wrote the script to this movie with Apatow and Dave Sirus, and will play into that genre of irreverent comedy with a real, human story at the foundation that we love to find in Judd Apatow movies. THR says the movie will be semi-autobiographical for Davidson, telling the story of a young man growing up in Staten Island.
This isn’t the first time Apatow has given a platform for an up-and-coming voice to play a version of themselves onscreen. For example, he did it for Amy Schumer in Trainwreck and Jason Segel in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Both films were warmly received by audiences, so we can’t wait to see what he and Pete Davidson come up with in this new movie.
THR says the project should kick off in May or June. There is no word on a release date just yet or who will round out the cast outside of Davidson. However, if Davidson’s past comedic work and Apatow’s past movies are any indications, this new flick won’t be one you want to miss.
