Casting for the Percy Jackson television series is officially underway— and the creators are kicking things off by searching for the perfect actor to play the titular role.
Author Rick Riordan kicked off the week by delivering some especially exciting news to fans who are eagerly awaiting any details they can get with regards to the new Percy Jackson TV series adaptation coming down the pipeline at Disney+.
On Tuesday (April 27), the author took to his official website to share that a preliminary casting call has been put out for the role of Percy Jackson himself.
In a lengthy post, Riordan stressed to fans that casting on the Percy Jackson TV series is still in the very early stages.
“We still have a long way to go before anything is official or confirmed, but this is definitely an indication that things are going in the right direction,” wrote Riordan of today’s exciting Percy Jackson TV series news.
In addition, the author offered up some answers to a few burning questions the fans have been wondering about with regards to what casting directors are looking for.
First and foremost, Riordan revealed that while “the goal is to stay true to the original story and have Percy’s character age from 12 to 16 over the course of the TV series,” casting directors aren’t necessarily looking for an actor who is 12 years of age. Instead, they’re simply “looking for an actor who can ‘play 12.’”
The author also revealed that a specific ethnicity has not been specified in the casting call for for the character.
“We are looking for the best person who can embody the character we all know and love from the books,” explained Rick Riordan. “As with all casting choices, we will be following Disney’s company policy, which states: We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to disability, gender, race and ethnicity, age, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law..”
Finally, the author revealed that anyone who wishes to submit a self-tape for consideration of the role of Percy Jackson in the TV series can do so by visiting the following website.”
As for casting for all other characters, Riordan told fans to be patient.
“First things first! Percy is the title character, obviously, and a lot of the other casting choices will be informed by whoever we get for Percy. I’ll let you know when we start thinking about those next steps,” wrote the author.
Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see the Percy Jackson TV series debut via Disney+.
