The cast and showrunners of Outlander made their grand return to San Diego Comic-Con where they teased what we can expect from season 3.
Though the cast and crew couldn’t say much for fear of spoiling us all, they did dish some interesting tidbits with regards to what’s to come. Check out five of the most interesting things we picked up during the panel below!
1. Season 3 poses a whole new journey for our characters.
“That’s why the book is called Voyager,” joked showrunner Ronald D. Moore.
The showrunner additionally revealed that this coming season will find fans exploring exactly what went down between the 20 years Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) spent apart.
“It’s a dynamic interesting season… that ends up in a completely different way from where we started,” said Moore.
2. No, Diana Gabaldon didn’t write an episode this season, and there’s a good reason why!
“Having written the book, I thought that was enough,” joked the author.
Even so, Gabaldon revealed that she did make it to set for a visit this season. The author told audiences in attendance that she joined the cast in South Africa for the scenes they filmed there.
3. We’ll get to see Jamie and Black Jack square off at Culloden.
Tobias Menzies couldn’t say much about the highly anticipated scene, but he did promise we’d get to see both characters meet on the fated battle field.
“Actually, I think it will be surprising,” said Menzies of the encounter. “I think it’s maybe not entirely what people expect from it…that’s what we’ve tried to do all the way along — invert the cliche, surprise the expectation.”
4. Both Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe felt the weight of the Print Shop scene.
When it comes to iconic moments in Gabaldon’s novels, it’s safe to say the Print Shop scene is high up there. Fans, however, can rest assured that the actors knew how important the pivotal moment is to the fandom.
Additionally, Balfe is positive the fans will love it, due largely in part to the amazing script written by Matt B. Roberts.
Of filming the scene, Balfe said that she tried not to let the weight of the moment effect her too much.
“I think with any of these moments, you know that they’re big fan moments so in a way it’s a tug of war because you don’t want to give it more credence because every scene is important,” said Balfe. “Obvioulsy it’s a huge moment for Claire and Jamie to find each other again.”
Meanwhile, Heughan stressed the heightened emotions that we’re bound to encounter when the moment eventually arrives come season 3.
“The characters have their own lives and ultimately go through all the emotions of grief and acceptance and losing someone that they love and for that person to come back into your life,” said Heughan before pausing for dramatic effect. “Would almost make a man faint.”
5. We got to see the first episode of season 3 and it was pretty epic!
By far the biggest moment of the night occurred when the cast revealed to the thousands of fans in attendance that they’d be treated to the premiere screening of season 3 episode 1.
We won’t say much, just in case you don’t want to get spoiled, but we will say that it was a pretty intense episode. We do get to see the scene in which Jamie and Black Jack square off (the aforementioned scene!)
You’ll get a good sense of where your favorite characters are, and it definitely sets up what’s to come when Outlander returns!
