A One Piece live-action show based on the best-selling manga series has been greenlit at Netflix.
Live-action anime adaptations haven’t always (or almost never, depending on your point of view) been the most successful, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping Netflix.
The streamer is currently developing a live-action version of the acclaimed and beloved anime series Cowboy Bebop starring John Cho as the iconic Spike Spiegel. Though that version is currently on hold pending Cho’s recovery from an injury suffered on set, it doesn’t look like Netflix is slowing down with its adaptations.
The streamer recently announced that it will be developing the mega popular manga series One Piece into a 10-episode live-action series.
First published in 1997, Eiichiro Oda’s manga series follows the adventures of a young man named Monkey D. Luffy. Inspired by his childhood idol, a powerful pirate named “Red Haired” Shanks, Luffy goes on a quest to find the fabled One Piece treasure and declare himself king of the pirates.
The story was first serialized in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, with the manga series going on to sell over 460 million copies worldwide.
The manga has already been adapted into an anime series, which previously aired on Cartoon Network in the United States, as well as video games and a series of full-length feature films in Japan. The series likewise made history in 2015 when it became the Guinness World Record title for having the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.
The One Piece live action series at Netflix will be adapted by Steven Maeda, best known for his work on LOST, The X-Files and Salvation, and Matt Owens of Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D fame.
A release date for One Piece has not yet been set.
