One Day At A Time cast, crew and fans aren’t taking any chances when it comes to doing everything they can to get the beloved Netflix sitcom renewed for a fourth season.
Despite rave reviews from television critics and Netflix viewers alike, it seems as though the fate of One Day At A Time is still very much up in the air.
The breakout Netflix sit-com debuted its highly anticipated third season earlier this month, and despite all the well deserved praise its gotten, showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett wants fans to know that the show isn’t necessarily a shoe-in for renewal.
Kellett took to Twitter on Wednesday (February 20) to fill fans in on what she knows about the potential for a season 4 so far. The showrunner paired the news with a call to action for fans who are hoping the series gets another season.
“NEWS: Met with @Netflix about @OneDayAtATime S4. They made it clear that they love the show, love how it serves underrepresented audiences, love its heart & humor but…we need more viewers,” tweeted Kellett “They’ll decide soon. I wish I felt more confident. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Tell friends to watch!”
The tweet also features a screenshot from Rotten Tomatoes featuring One Day At A Time’s impressive perfect score.

This isn’t the first time the series has faced cancellation. Just last year, One Day At A Time faced a similar fate before Netflix eventually renewed the series for a third season toward the end of March 2018 — three months after its season 2 premiere.
So how many more views does ODAAT need before Netflix deems it worthy of renewal?
It’s tough to say. Especially given that the online streaming giant is so cagey when it comes to how it calculates its viewership.
Shortly after Kellett’s tweet spurred fans of the show into action, THR’s West Coast TV Editor Lesley Goldberg took to Twitter to shed some light on how renewals at Netflix work.
It seems as though the bulk of the issue could lie in the fact that while One Day At A Time is billed as a Netflix Original, it’s not technically owned by the streaming company.
“Context: Netflix makes renewal decision based on cost vs. viewership (whatever that may be),” tweeted Goldberg. “One Day At A Time is owned by an outside studio (Sony TV) and Netflix has to pay a $$ licensing fee.”

Bottom line, it looks as though we’ll have to wait until we hear official word from Netflix. And while you’re waiting, it won’t hurt to get the good word out about what a great show ODAAT is to family and friends if you’re crossing your fingers for a season 4!
