This year New Girl laughed in the face of the sophomore slump. Here are our top 10 favorite moments from season 2 in honor of Tuesday’s season finale.
10). Cookie Debacle
“You love me too much Schmidt and you picked the wrong guy!”
Who knew buying your best friend a cookie could lead to so much drama and heartbreak, right guys?! So maybe this wasn’t one of the big driving plotlines of the season. But it had to be included in our list because of how PERFECTLY it sums up the Schmidt/Nick relationship. This is the ultimate one true pairing on New Girl. No matter how much you ship Nick/Jess, Schmidt/Cece, or Winston/Fruity Drinks you can’t deny that this friendship will last forever. Because Schmidty understands that Nick is a broken empty husk of a man – and that’s totally ok because he can smother him with enough love for them both! It’s perfect!
9).Water Massage
“Why are you cradling me like a baby, friend?”
We’re not going to pretend like this was the most substantial moment of New Girl this season, but… We just couldn’t let water massage pass without giving it its proper due!! Did you watch Nick and his unnamed friend (AKA ‘Tran’) hang out and cry with laughter? Do you sometimes rewatch this episode to cheer you up after a really long day? This is a safe place – you can admit it if you do because we’re proud of this weird, slightly creepy relationship here at Hypable. And New Girl is all about embracing your inner weird. So sing it loud and proud folks! WATER MASSAGE FOR ONE AND ALL!
8). Cece/Schmidt
“You don’t ever have to be nice around me.”
Ok so maybe the Schmidt/Cece relationship is tense and a little awkward and there are about a billion unresolved feelings they still have to sort through. But they do seem to have gotten to a pretty good place this year. Slowly but surely the two have managed to pack up their romantic feelings and resentment long enough for them to become friends. For the audience the evolving relationship is like the most delicious slow burn we could ever hope for. Plus, not only are they getting closer – they’re also growing as individuals. Cece is learning how to be friends with a person who challenges her, while Schmidt is learning that you can’t have a substantial relationship without letting go a little bit. We know this truce is only going to last so long though…. Something tells us that come Cece’s wedding day, all bets are off again.
7). Future Nick
“Do we ever get famous?” “Three words: Hot. Air. Balloon.”
Who knows where in the world this idea came from. At the very beginning of season 2 Nick becomes convinced that he’s met Old Nick (himself from the future). Yes it’s the most random and off the wall thing in the world for Nick to get caught up in. But will you ever hear us complaining? No. Because not only does the story lend itself to some HI-LARIOUS back and forth discussions between Future and Present Nick – it also has a place in the larger arc of the season.
6). Emotional Fluffer
“I can’t let you fluff me. I can’t let you work in emotional porn.”
The American language has been in need of this term for so long you guys. “Emotional Fluffer” was coined on New Girl this season, and thank the good lord for it. We now have a way to perfectly describe one of the most ancient and slightly one sided relationships known to man. Anyone who has been in a situation where their best friend was basically dating them, without all the sexy bits attached of course, will know what we’re talking about here.
5). Here Comes the Bride
“I am so excited to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Everyone had to be pretty skeptical about Shivrang in the beginning. But the dude has done a pretty spectacular job at winning us and Cece over. He’s sweet, patient, loyal, and generally a decent human being. It would be hard for Cece to not fall in love with that, any person in their right mind would. But the thing is, are we really sold on the fact that these two are completely head-over-heals for each other? Because it seems more like a marriage of convenience that could one day grow into true love… So as exciting and life changing this wedding might be, everyone should probably hold off on ripping up their wedding gift receipts.
4). Laid off Jess
“I panicked, and I grabbed the hat.”
OK, so maybe this isn’t the BEST thing that happened to Jess this season, but for the audience it was pure gold. We can talk until we’re blue in the face about how this story moves the plot along, gives the character a new challenge to overcome, and blah de blah blah… Basically, our frantic, shot girl pretending, weird-felt-art-making Jess is the most beautiful thing on television. And if it weren’t for her crumbling life we would have missed out in some quality TV. So THERE. Sorry Jess, but this is a ‘lemons into lemonade’ situation.
3). The True American Drinking Game
“Your butt just violated the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act!”
Are there even words to describe the amazingness that is True American? If there are, this writer is too under qualified to find them. But if you’re not in the know here’s the basics. In episode 2×15 the roommates get together to play the strip version of True American: an astronomically crazy – completely fictitious game – that makes LITERALLY no sense. The show writers themselves admit to the fact that even they don’t even understand the rules or how to play. But you know what? That hasn’t stopped fans from constructing something kind-of-sort-of playable. Hats off to you dedicated fans. Hats off to you.
2). First Kiss
“I meant something like that.”
This is going to be everyone’s number one moment this season. And that’s totally alright because it has rightfully earned the spot. There’s no denying that this kiss will go down in history books. Like, it’s the hand on the window of the car in Titanic, it’s the “You had me at hello” from Jerry Maguire, it’s the groans of complete ecstasy from When Harry Met Sally … This is THE KISS. And the only reason why we’re not putting it into our number one spot is because we have to be cool and do the unexpected things. So, sue us.
1). Morning After Breakfast
“I got an idea. Stay right here, ok?”
In all seriousness though –we have got to properly give tribute to this moment. Kisses, dates, and first times are all romantic and supper swoon worthy. But guys. Nick Miller made someone breakfast in bed. He made JESS breakfast in bed. Just pause for a second to take that in. Yes, the scrambled eggs may have been runny and the grapefruit was literally torn apart with his bear hands, but he made an effort. Nick was happy and proud – willing to actually try for once, because he felt like it was worth it… If that isn’t sexy and romantic then maybe you should get your parts checked.
