Sony Pictures is keeping things in the family for the next installment of the Ghostbusters franchise.
According to Variety, director Jason Reitman has officially been tapped to direct the next Ghostbusters film over at Sony Pictures.
Reitman has an interesting tie to Ghostbusters: his father, Ivan, directed the first two installments of the supernatural comedy franchise back in the ’80s.
Unfortunately, Reitman’s film won’t have any connection to the events that transpired in the all-female 2016 reboot which starred Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
Instead, Reitman’s film will reportedly serve as a direct sequel to the events that transpire in the 1984 installment of the franchise.

Currently, there’s no word on whether any of the original cast will return to reprise their roles. That being said, given that Reitman’s film is a direct sequel, we’re sure the matter of who might return will be the subject of much discussion in years to come as the film moves further and further into production.
No details for the plot of the upcoming movie have been revealed. One interesting thing to note, however, is that sources have said Reitman is currently testing teenagers for four mystery roles.
There’s currently no word on when Reitman’s film will hit the big screen.
