Sheila and Joel Hammond are back and totally healthy, normal, and fine in the Santa Clarita season 2 trailer.
Netflix’s horror-comedy series Santa Clarita Diet provided a bizarre new spin on the well-worn zombie genre. The series stars Drew Barrymore as Sheila Hammond, a real estate agent, wife, mom, and also low-key zombie just trying to make it in this crazy world without eating too many of her neighbors.
The first season of the show followed Sheila and her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) as they tried to understand exactly what happened to Sheila to cause her to become a member of the walking dead. The couple tried to figure out the best way to help Sheila manage her disease, and weirdly enough, the experience brought them closer as a couple and as a family.
In the newly released trailer for season 2 of the Netflix show, we see that the two are still figuring out what it means to be a modern American family when one member of that family is a zombie who needs to eat human flesh to live. You know, problems we all face like how to remodel your home with the perfect kill room that doesn’t look so much like a kill room that it alerts the neighbors. Basic homeowner problems, right?
Of course, one of the weirdly sweet things about this show is how it uses Sheila becoming a zombie as her catalyst to start taking life by the horns. With the zombie virus forcing her to let go of her inhibitions (which can become problematic when it leads to her, you know, killing and eating someone, but no one is perfect) she is able to articulate what she really wants out of life and strive for it.
Santa Clarita Diet is a truly hilarious show with surprising, heartfelt, genuine moments that make the series stand out from other zombie shows and other family comedies. We’re so excited to check back in with the Hammonds when the show returns to Netflix on March 23.
