The second half of Nashville season 3 has dealt with a lot of changes, primarily the fact that Rayna and Luke did not get their happy ending, at least not with each other. Read on to see what we think will happen next!
It is no surprise to any longtime or even casual viewer of the show that Rayna is destined for a love with Deacon. The way it all went down was a bit sedate for the show. Until Luke went crazy. To recap: Rayna met Luke last season after her accident left her relationship with Deacon in shambles. He brings her back to life, essentially. And the publicity of two of country music’s hottest stars doesn’t hurt either one’s careers.
The magic really started with their song, “Ball and Chain,” which you can listen to below. In this clip from the Nashville season 2 finale, “On the Other Hand,” Luke decides to spontaneously propose to his woman.
She also got a proposal from Deacon later that night but we all know she chose the safe but wrong choice and went with Luke Wheeler. The stress of a joint tour, blending their two families together, planning a very hasty wedding, and all the other stresses (primarily the fact that she was still in love with Deacon) led Rayna to end the engagement the morning of the wedding.
Luke did not take to kindly to this, destroying the cake with his car and shooting champagne bottles on top of sending her the bill for the whole outrageous affair. Despite her pleas to handle the cancelled nuptials with grace, he was too mad to see clearly. After he calmed down and saw that Rayna had taken the high road with the press, he decided to hold a private concert at his house since he had the food and setup all ready to go. The performance, which you can watch below, is actually one of our favorites and reminds us of Luke Bryan, which is never a bad thing!
Generally when a character loses his love and isn’t a main cast member, they are quickly jettisoned off the show. Not the case with Luke, it seems, as he is around for the foreseeable future. Luke is not the most likable character these days, but he once brought some swagger to the show, so there is hope he can make his way out of his heartbreak to get back to that guy. What can he do on the show?
Well, for starters he just might be a new mentor to Gunnar and Will, both of whom could use the support in different areas of their careers. He could be a love interest for Sadie, which would cause some seriously awkward moments with Rayna, so we are all aboard this ship! And he just might be Rayna’s new business rival. From the looks of this week’s episode has the two fighting for musicians now that Edgehill is a thing of the past.
While Luke could use some character rehab, we know that the show can come through in that department — just take a look at Avery. He is now a part of one of the show’s main love stories and has deep friendships with people in his past that he hated. If anyone can overcome his current situation, it’s Luke, with the writers’ help, of course.
