Disney has announced release dates for a slew of anticipated films over the next couple years, and they canceled one project related to The Little Mermaid.
The Muppets 2 will open March 21, 2014. Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird’s 1952 starring George Clooney will open December 19, 2014. And Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be released July 10, 2015.
In addition to these revealations, we learned that Maleficent – starring Angelina Jolie – will be released July 2, 2014. It was previously set for March 2014. You can see on-set photos of Jolie filming in our previous story. Adorably, her real life daughter will play Princess Aurora.
Of the three, the film we know most about so far is The Muppets sequel. The story takes place in Europe and includes new cast member Ricky Gervais. Tina Fey is rumored to be joining the film as well. Cristoph Waltz, who most recently appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, will play the villain.
Disney has confirmed that Jeff Nathanson has been tapped to write the script for Pirates 5. Nathanson is best known for Catch Me If You Can.
And finally, Disney has noted that plans to re-release The Little Mermaid in 3D have been scrapped. It was to be the latest in a line of 3D re-releases from Disney/Pixar which included The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Monsters, Inc., and Finding Nemo.
