Facebook hasn’t even taken down the rainbow overlays, and already the legalization of same-sex marriage is on its way to the big screen.
On June 26, the Supreme Court made history, legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

Not long after, the satirical online news site The Onion posted a hilarious article claiming that the Supreme Court Justices that voted against the decision (it was a close call, with a 5-4 majority) were already preparing to be the villains of a major motion picture based on the court case.
“I’m going to be played by some sinister character actor in a drama with tons of award buzz, aren’t I?” The Onion faux-quoted Associate Judge Antonin Scalia as saying.
Well, this’ll all become a reality a lot sooner than anyone was prepared for.
Deadline reports that Fox 2000 has already nabbed the rights to the movie — or rather, the “life rights” of lead plaintiff Jim Obergefell and his lawyer Al Gerhardstein.
Obergefell, as you may remember, married his partner John Arthur in 2013. After Arthur passed away in 2014, Obergefell fought to get his name on his partner’s death certificate.
Fox has also obtained the rights to Obergefell and journalist Debbie Cenziper’s book on the case, 21 Years To Midnight, and Temple Hill is on board to produce.
Of course we don’t know how long it will take for this movie to get made, but knowing the swiftness of Hollywood, it’ll probably be sooner rather than later.
Another fictionalized version of a recent court case, American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson, premieres in 2016 — less than 10 years after the case was finally resolved.
