The first awards season celebration is now behind us, as the 22nd annual Gotham Awards were held last night to celebrate independent cinema, with Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom and Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild winning big.
Hosted by Sleepwalk With Me‘s Mike Birbiglia, the ceremonies also benefitted from the presence of such stars as Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Emily Blunt, David O. Russell, Billy Crudup, John Krasinksi, Jacki Weaver and Amy Adams brought some spotlight to the awards. In terms of the actual winners, a big surprise was Emayatzy Corinealdi winning Breakthrough Actor for Middle of Nowhere over Oscar contender Quevenzhané Wallis, whose film Beasts of the Southern Wild picked up two awards, despite not being nominated in the Best Feature category.
