Pixar’s next short film is based in the Monsters University world and will play before Muppets Most Wanted in theaters this March.
Though we’ve known about the short film for a few months, today we have the first clip from Party Central and new details about what Mike and Sulley are up to.
The Monsters University short film clip, viewable below, shows Mike and Sulley getting a pair of doors into place so that they can get their Oozma Kappa friends to a party better than the one they’re supposedly hosting themselves:
Moviefone had the chance to watch the short film before interviewing the director, and they describe it as a “wildly entertaining bit of filmmaking so packed with insane detail that, as soon as it’s over, begs to be re-watched.” They also note that it has a PG rating from the MPAA – the first time a Disney short film has received a rating above G since the Roger Rabbit short “Roller Coaster Rabbit” in 1990.
Director Kelsey Mann says that the idea for Party Central stemmed from a scene they really wanted to include in Monsters University last year. “It’s funny… There’s always stuff that doesn’t make its way in, whether it’s the movie or the short. But that’s where the short came from — from the movie. I remember, near the end, I always wanted to see their party. It’s the first thing they say they want, this party. And I said, ‘We’ve got to have this in the movie! I don’t care if it’s in the credits. I want to see this party.'”
Mann says that when the idea of doing a short film came up (originally set to debut with The Good Dinosaur before it was pushed from 2014 to 2015), they decided to go with this concept. “We thought that it was the perfect opportunity to pay off something that we wanted to do in the movie but couldn’t find the right time and the right moment to do it. So it presented a perfect opportunity. When you work in story, you have these ideas that you had five years ago and they can always come back.”
Muppets Most Wanted and Party Central arrive in theaters March 21.
