Things got a bit out of control when Cam ran the high school’s spring dance on Modern Family season 5, episode 16, “Spring-A-Ding-Fling.” Find out what happened with our recap and discuss with other fans!
Here are the highlights from Modern Family season 5, episode 16, “Spring-A-Ding-Fling”:
Cam and Mitch start off the day super excited about the opportunities at their jobs. Mitch got a new dream job helping others, while Cam gets to run the school’s spring dance. Claire will also be at the dance as a chaperon while Phil and Haley attend the annual realtor’s banquet.
Things are a little off when Mitch goes to his new office. He can’t tell when his new boss Wendy (played by Aisha Tyler) is joking or serious. And she seems a little harsh when speaking to other employees. His desk also contains a note saying, “Run!” left by his predecessor.
Mitch worries that Wendy is a tyrant at the workplace, especially when he sees her attacking a vending machine, then hears coworkers talking about the horrible work conditions. Things get worse when Wendy asks him to take care of the smelly office dog.
Deciding to be the hero of the office, Mitch stands up to Wendy about everything he’s seen throughout the day. It turns out that when she asked him to groom Rex, she meant the intern, not her dog. And that what he overheard his coworkers saying was about a case they were working on. They also back her attacking the vending machine, saying that’s the only way it works.
Jay and Gloria get ready to go car shopping when Mitch calls and asks them to babysit Lily. When Gloria finds her phone smashed, Lily blames baby Joe. Jay thinks he can get Lily to admit the truth, but his tactics don’t work. Gloria uses a different – more threatening – tactic that still doesn’t break Lily.
When Lily claims that baby Joe walked to get Gloria’s phone, they really don’t believe her. But when she goes to prove it to them, he miraculously walks for the first time in front of them. Little do they know it’s his first time for real, and that Lily did actually break the phone.
All the attention from running the school dance may just be going to Cam’s head, but when legendary teacher Senor Kaplan (played by Will Sasso) returns from sabbatical, the attention is quickly taken away.
Claire comes home from work to find Luke and his friend Rhonda wrestling in the dirt, as Alex and her friend Drew are inside talking about going to the dance to make fun of the kids who take the dance seriously.
Although he was trying to be the bigger person, Cam can’t help but be peeved by Kaplan as he comments about the dance, so they take their dispute to the dance floor. Cam uses Claire to win the dance battle and is happy to see Kaplan walk off in defeat.
Claire can’t help butting in with what she thinks is Alex’s crush. But what she thinks is helping makes Alex feel like she’s being pimped out. Plus Luke gets mad at her for “breaking” Rhonda and tells her to fix it. She feels awful until she sees both her kids with their dates on the dance floor.
Phil’s performance at the banquet goes well until he spots Haley on her phone and gets distracted, causing him to fall off stage! He admits to another realtor he’s feeling down about boring his own daughter. That is, until Haley accepts an award on his behalf, gushes about him, and recites the rest of the jokes from his interrupted performance.
