Miles Teller will soon be suiting up alongside Tom Cruise for upcoming Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
According to Variety Teller, who has starred in films like Only The Brave, That Awkward Moment and the Divergent series, will playing Maverick’s new protege in the upcoming sequel to the 1986 classic.
Teller’s character will have a significant tie to the original Top Gun. Though the casting annoumcent didn’t include the name of his character, we do know that he’ll be playing the son of Goose.
As fans of the original Top Gun will undoubtedly remember, Goose (played by Anthony Edwards) was Maverick’s original co-pilot. This time around, it’ll be his son that’s sitting in the seat opposite Cruise’s Maverick.
Teller reportedly beat out some stiff competition to score the role. Others who reportedly read for the part opposite the Mission: Impossible – Fallout star include Glen Powell (Set It Up, Hidden Figures) and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, X-Men: Apocalypse).
Cruise won’t be the only one returning for the sequel, which is slated to center around a world full of drones and fifth generation fighters. Val Kilmer is also returning to reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
Behind the scenes, Jerry Bruckheimer is returning to produce alongside Cruise and David Ellison of Skydance. Meanwhile, Joe Kosinski (Oblivion) will serve as director.
Top Gun: Maverick is set to fly into theaters next summer on July 12, 2019.
