The upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Venom, may have just added another major cast member to their ranks!
According to Variety, actress Michelle Williams is officially in talks to star opposite Tom Hardy in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff.
Rumor has it that if Williams is cast, she’ll be stepping into the role of a district attorney who could potentially end up being Hardy’s love interest.
Sources say that Sony has been trying to cast the role for months for the film which is set to begin filming next month, so it sounds like Williams’ involvement couldn’t have come at a better time.
Venom was first introduced into the Spider-Man universe back in 1988. The sentient alien was originally meant to be a super villain, but the popular character has since evolved into a bit of an anti-hero.
On the big screen, Venom was most recently portrayed by That 70s Show alumn Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3. In the film, we got to see Grace’s Venom square off with Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man. That being said, fans of the web-slinger shouldn’t hold their breath when it comes to hoping we might get to see Hardy’s venom cross paths with Marvel’s current Spider-Man: Homecoming universe.
Sony’s spinoff is meant to serve as a stand-alone film, meaning we won’t see it play any sort of role in the current Spider-Man cinematic universe.
Williams isn’t the only new cast member set to join Hardy on the upcoming project. We learned back in August that Emmy Award winner Riz Ahmed is also reportedly in talks to join the cast of Venom. Unlike Williams’ potential role, however, the studio hasn’t revealed who Ahmed will play.
Written by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) ad Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower), and directed by Ruben Fleischer, Venom is slated to hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
