Sam Esmail, the genius behind Mr. Robot, is developing a new show which will be a remake of the classic science-fiction film Metropolis.
Mr. Robot finished up its second season run back in September, and creator Sam Esmail has continued to prove he’s a unique voice in television, with fans excited and (as always) a little bewildered by the show’s mysteries.
Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Esmail will be taking on another project in a reboot of Metropolis, which was directed by Fritz Lang.
Metropolis was a silent film set in the year 2026 (just a decade away!) where the wealthy live in high-rises and the working class lives underground. Joh Fredersen runs the city of Metropolis, and his son is content to live a cushy lifestyle until he witnesses a fatal accident and watches as his father does nothing. After that, the son rebels and helps the people working in his father’s factory.
Universal Cable Productions is producing the miniseries, and apparently Esmail has a seven-figure overall deal and there’s a budget of $10 million per episode, so it sounds like the company has high hopes for this show.
THR reports that “the project is in the very early stage of development,” and so Esmail’s exact role is unknown, though if he plans to work on Metropolis in the way he’s worked on Mr. Robot, you can expect his genius to be infused into every shot.
As amazing as this sounds, though, don’t get too excited just yet. Insiders are reporting that Metropolis won’t be getting off the ground for another few years, speculating that it could be 2018 or 2019 before we see it come to life.
It would be a bit too long to wait, but how fitting would it be if a Metropolis reboot premiered in the year 2026 — nearly 100 years after the original, no less!
Metropolis is actually available to watch on Netflix, so if you haven’t seen it before, go give it a try. Note that the movie *is* from 1927, but its special effects were groundbreaking for the time.
You want another fun fact? Star Wars droid C3PO’s early designs were based on the Maschinenmensch from Metropolis — which is relevant considering Rogue One just landed in theaters!
