Looks like Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein will be the stars of director Richard Linklater’s next big screen project.

Director Richard Linklater is looking to recreate the magic of 2014’s Boyhood with his next film, which, like the coming-of-age drama, is set to be filmed over the course of quite a few years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Linklater is gearing up to work with producers Ginger Sledge and Jason Blum on a big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical, Merrily We Roll Along.

Sondheim’s musical, which is based off of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s play of the same name, tells the story of a Broadway composer named Franklin Shepard who ditches the New York theatre scene in favor of heading to Los Angeles to work as a producer in the movie industry.

The play takes place over the course of 20 years, and Linklater himself has confirmed that he plans to film his rendition over the course of two decades — similar to what he did with Boyhood back in 2014, which was shot over 12 years total.

In a statement released on Thursday (August 29), Linklater said: “I first saw and fell in love with Merrily in the ’80s, and I can’t think of a better place to spend the next 20 years than in the world of a Sondheim musical. I don’t enter this multiyear experience lightly, but it seems the best, perhaps only way, to do this story justice on film.”

In addition to annoucing the project, it was also revealed that Linklater has found his stars for the forthcoming adaptation in none other than real life besties Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein, plus former Glee star Blake Jenner.

Feldstein, who is coming off the critically acclaimed Booksmart, will play Shepard’s friend and theater critic Mary Flynn. Blake Jenner, who previously worked with Linklater on Everybody Wants Some!!, has been tapped to play Shepard himself.

As for Platt, the Tony Award-winner who can next be seen in Netflix’s The Politician, revealed via Twitter that he’ll be playing the roll of Charley Kringas.

In addition, the Dear Evan Hansen scribe also wrote some kind words with regards to how thrilled he is to be involved with the project.

“This project has already been one of the most special blessings of my life. Me, my favorite person @BeanieFeldstein & sweet @Blake_Jenner get to portray dream roles in this brilliant marriage of piece & concept courtesy of Rick Linklater & @improbablyjust,” tweeted Platt.

Obviously we’ll have to wait for quite some time before Merrily We Roll Along hits theaters, but we’ll be looking forward to updates about the movie in the meantime as the cast and crew continue to work on it over the years!
