Netflix gave us a first look at The Politician, Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Platt.
Ryan Murphy has been responsible for giving us some of the biggest (Glee, American Horror Story), best (Pose), and strangest (Scream Queens…and also Glee) shows on TV.
Last year, he announced that he’d be moving his talents to Netflix, where he scored a five-year, $300 million contract to create content for the streaming giant.
The first of his shows for Netflix is The Politician, a dark comedy starring Tony Award-winner Ben Platt of Dear Evan Hanson fame and Gwyneth Paltrow, whose fame needs no introduction.
Check out the gallery of new photos below of the show Ryan Murphy described as “a class takedown in the vein of such satirical 1970s films as The Candidate and Shampoo — but with a modern, Trumpy twist.”
The Politician is a dark comedic satire on just what it takes to become a politician in America. The series focuses on Ben Platt’s Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), an incredibly rich student from Santa Barbara, California, who has wanted to be the President of the United States since he was seven years old. The show will follow him as he navigates the ruthless HS politics of Saint Sebastian High School, works to get elected Student Body President, get accepted into Harvard and stays on the path to the presidency.
Joining Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow on The Politician as series regulars are Jessica Lange from American Horror Story, Zoey Deutch from Set It Up, Lucy Boynton from Murder on the Orient Express, Laura Dreyfuss from Glee, and Rahne Jones from Godspell, with Bette Midler and Judith Light likewise making appearances on the show.
The Politician received a two-season straight-to-series order at Netflix and was created by Ryan Murphy alongside his frequent collaborators Ian Brennan (the co-creator of Glee) and Brad Falchuk (the co-creator of American Horror Story and Feud).
The Politician drops on Netflix on September 27.
