Lucifer season 1, episode 2, “Lucifer, Stay. Good Devil,” just finished airing! Did the second installment live up to the pilot?
Detective Decker can’t figure out how Lucifer survived being shot six times in the pilot. She learns his name is actually Lucifer Morningstar, but nothing about him exists beyond the last five years. But Lucifer has his own questions; namely, why he can’t affect her. This leads him to following her around on her next case.
Technically, it’s not really her case. She’s still on leave from her injury, but this one is personal. A famous actor’s son was being followed by a paparazzo when he crashed and died. The paparazzo in question, Nick Hoffmeister, and Chloe Dancer have had run-ins before, back when she was still acting. She wants nothing more than to pin this crime on him, but he confesses too easily, and she knows something is up.
Amenadiel visits Lucifer post-threesome (and let’s just say Lucifer is definitely not picky), and the Devil points out that the Archangel is just afraid he’ll have to replace the former Prince of Darkness. Amenadiel sounds confident that’ll never happen, but Lucifer says God sent his favorite to Hell before — why not again? But the angel is also quick to point out that Luci is changing.
This does seem to bother Lucifer, but he’s quick to move on. He wants to find out what kind of personal history Chloe and Nick have together, and what she did in her past that she’s ashamed of, so he visits the dung beetle at the station.
Nick reveals that Chloe got violent with him after he crashed her father’s funeral. He also reveals he’s been protecting someone, someone he’s mentoring, but he’s just not willing to give up a name, no matter how much Lucifer pushes. When Chloe finds out about his little visit, she’s none too happy, but she still invites him along to crash a party where the real killer could be.
The strange pair track down Josh, Nick’s protégé, and sense something fishy is going on. Lucifer gets him to confess he always wants to be first, and Chloe realizes to what lengths he’s willing to go to be first. As Chloe talks Nick into testifying, Lucifer and Mazikeen go after the kid to enact some well-deserved punishment. Oh, and they steal Nick right from under everyone’s noses, too.
Lucifer and Maze bring Nick and Josh together and force them to live out their punishment on Earth, since Lucifer isn’t in Hell to do the job. Maze places a pair of guns in front of them, and Josh is first to go after it. Only, it’s empty. Nick picks up the other gun in retribution, but Chloe shows up just in time. Lucifer and Chloe play angel and Devil on Nick’s shoulders, but it seems as though Lucifer wins out. Nick pulls the trigger.
Then, Lucifer does something surprising. He prays. Amenadiel arrives, and as time slows, Lucifer grabs the bullet and kicks Josh in the balls. He refuses Amenadiel’s offer to return to Hell, and the Archangel leaves with a warning for the Prince of Darkness. Who knows what’s going to happen next.
Once time returns to normal, Chloe sees how Lucifer jumped from one place to the other and you can see her start to believe Lucifer might really be who he says he is. It drives her to Jimmy’s cell, where she asks what happened to him after he shot her, when Lucifer attacked him. Jimmy starts yelling and banging his head against the wall, telling Chloe that Lucifer really is the Devil.
