The live-action Pokémon movie is moving forward as it finds one of its writers in the Guardians of the Galaxy scribe.
As we last reported, Legendary Pictures landed the rights for a live-action Pokémon movie, which will star Detective Pikachu, the main character from the video game of the same name.
According to Wikipedia, the game follows a talking Pikachu “who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.”
Of course, the movie could go in a completely different direction with the Detective Pikachu idea, but this is a good place to start our speculation.
Variety is also now reporting that both Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch have joined the project to write the script for the film.
Hirsch is best known for his contributions to Gravity Falls, both the television show and the shorts, while Perlman has been making her rounds in the Marvel world. She has helped pen both Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy, and is also working on the script for Captain Marvel.
She’s even worked on the third Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr., which seems particularly relevant here.
This project has a lot of people scratching their heads — because, c’mon, a live-action Pokémon film? — but the writers behind the movie are proving to be a solid choice. Hirsch’s Disney classic has a large following and Perlman is obviously used to taking on high-profile projects. They may just be what this movie needs to create a solid foundation.
After that, it’ll be up to the director and the actors to sell us on live-action Pokémon.
