The Little Mermaid live-action reboot has officially cast its Prince Eric, and it looks like this casting appointment will stick.
The Little Mermaid has officially ended its search for a new Prince Eric. Jonah Hauer-King is slated to play the role off of Halle Bailey’s Ariel.
Of course, the role wasn’t initially slated for Hauer-King. Initially, Harry Styles was in serious talks to play the role of the prince, but he ultimately passed on the role to allow him the freedom to promote his new music.
As The Hollywood Reporter explains, Disney went on a months-long search to find an actor to replace Styles and narrowed it down to Hauer-King and Krypton’s Cameron Cuffe. Ultimately, they landed on Hauer-King, who has appeared in projects like A Dog’s Way Home, the 2017 BBC adaptation of Little Women, and World on Fire.
He’s joining an incredibly exciting cast for this live-action adaptation of the beloved Little Mermaid cartoon. In addition to Bailey playing Ariel, Javier Bardem will play King Triton, Melissa McCarthy will play Ursula, Jacob Tremblay will play Flounder, Awkwafina will voice Scuttle, and Daveed Diggs will play Sebastian the Crab.
Rob Marshall will be directing The Little Mermaid, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is joining the cartoon’s original composer, Alan Menken, to bring familiar tunes as well as new, original music to the film. Miranda will also be serving as a producer with John DeLuca and Rob Marshall.
Marc Platt, who produced Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, will be returning to the Disney live-action remake world to produce The Little Mermaid.
Thankfully, it seems the movie found its Prince Eric quickly, so things can continue moving on as scheduled and we don’t have to have any delays in getting this exciting remake made. The Little Mermaid is slated to begin production in the first half of 2020, but an official production start date hasn’t been announced.
