Netflix and Lin-Manuel Miranda are teaming up to bring us the Hamilton creator’s big, directorial debut of the musical Tick, Tick…Boom!
It’s a pretty awesome time to be Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton has become a massive Broadway success, his first major Broadway musical In the Heightsis currently being adapted into a major motion picture, he’s starred in Mary Poppins Returns and will star in the upcoming HBO series His Dark Materials, and he’s about to make his directorial debut on Netflix.
As Variety reports Miranda will be directing an adaptation of the Jonathan Larson (RENT) musical Tick, Tick…Boom! for Netflix. There was quite the intense bidding war to win the rights to the Miranda-helmed project, and the streaming giant ultimately won out.
The original Larson script will be adapted by Dear Evan Hansen Steven Levenson, and alongside of Miranda, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Julie Oh will produce the film. There are no official casting announcements yet, but Variety reports that Andrew Garfield is the current favorite to star.
Tick, Tick…Boom! is set in the ’90s and tells the story of aspiring theater composer, Jon as he waits tables in New York City while he’s writing a musical he hopes will give him his big break. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday and feels pressures from his girlfriend and friends who abandoned their dreams for more traditional, high-paying jobs, Jon begins to wonder if the sacrifices he’s making to achieve his dreams are really worth it.
The story was a highly personal one for Larson, as Larson’s dad explains that the show was autobiographical in the liner in the original cast recording. So it’s wonderful that Lin-Manuel Miranda, a man who has made it no secret how much of an inspiration Larson was for his own theater career, is the one to bring this story and this musical to the screen.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is a huge staple in the modern theater world, and we’re so excited to see him marry the world of the stage to the world of movies. Live theater is notoriously tough for people to enjoy thanks to things like location challenges and the high cost of tickets, so it’s really exciting to see creators exploring ways to bring these important and beautiful stories to a wider audience.
We’ll be following this story as casting news and premiere dates are released, so check back as more news breaks.
