The LEGO Super Mario set will feature a fully expressive Mario face, as he jumps on Goombas and collects coins on custom-made LEGO stages.
A LEGO Super Mario set will remain true to the video game origins of the mustachioed plumber in a fully interactive brick-building experience.
The LEGO Super Mario kit featured in the set’s announcement video shows Mario jumping on enemies’ heads as he works to reach the end of a custom-made level before the 60-second timer runs out. When he lands on a question mark block, his belly lights up to display the collected coins.

Mario has unique reactions when he lands on specific blocks that are read by the color sensors on his feet, as is detailed by Brothers Brick’s interview with Jonathan Bennink, the Design Manager at the LEGO Creative Play Lab and Digital Design Lead for LEGO Super Mario.
Bennick went on to reference the Bluetooth brand symbol on Mario’s back, stating, “I can tell you that it doesn’t connect to the Switch. It doesn’t connect to the Nintendo hardware platforms. This is because we wanted to keep the experiences very separate.”
In the reveal video, we see Mario entering a warp pipe, fighting Bowser Jr., and touching a flag pole to initiate the end level music. It all looks very impressive, but until fans get their hands on this complicated setup, we don’t know how well it will function.
The release for the set states that you will be able to “Create LEGO brick challenges for you and your friends, defeat enemies and of course, collect coins!”
Bennick went on to say that LEGO and Nintendo are not yet ready to announce any price points, release dates, or future LEGO Super Mario sets.
