The Road actor Kodi Smit-McPhee has signed on to Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, joining the previously cast Jason Clarke.
This casting will reunite Smit-McPhee with his Let Me In helmer after Reeves took over for Rupert Wyatt, who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Andy Serkis is set to reprise his motion-capture performance as Ceasar.
Deadline reported the news, writing that Smit-McPhee has been cast in a “lead role,” although not specifying which character he’s playing. Serkis and Clarke are the only other two actors on board the project, which is ramping up for a May 23, 2014 release date.
When the Jason Clarke news broke, THR wrote of the film’s plot:
One focus is on the group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco. Another aspect of the story is the struggle of intelligent ape Caesar, played by a returning Andy Serkis, to maintain dominance over his kingdom.
Smit-McPhee has become something of a hot commodity since his excellent performance opposite Viggo Mortensen in The Road. In addition to Let Me In, he also lent his vocal talents to the lead character in the Oscar-nominated ParaNorman, and has several projects in development, including playing Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, penned by Downton Abbey‘s Julian Fellowes.
