Jupiter Ascending was supposed to be released this summer, but now it won’t hit theaters until February 2015.
Variety is reporting that Warner Bros has delayed the Andy and Lana Wachowski sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending from July 8 until February 6, 2015. Currently, no reason has been given for the delay. Update: Deadline says it’s due to visual effects not yet being completed.
Jupiter Ascending was written and directed by the Wachowskis and was their return to sci-fi after the successful Matrix trilogy. Starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, the film was one of the most anticipated of the summer.
At this point we can only speculate as to why the film was delayed. With only seven weeks before it was supposed to be released, it would appear that Warner Bros didn’t have faith in the film and wanted to avoid a box office flop. February is a month that typically doesn’t have too many box office successes, so perhaps the film is being given a date to hide. There very well could be reshoots between now and then as well.
Jupiter Ascending will line up against Johnny Depp’s Mortdecai, Liam Neeson’s Run All Night, and Jeff Bridges’ Seventh Son on February 6, assuming one or more of them doesn’t vacate the date.
Official synopsis:
From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
