One of the most iconic Judy Blume novels is gearing up to hit the big screen.
Author Judy Blume has finally agreed to allow her hit coming-of-age novel, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret to be adapted for the silver screen.
The upcoming adaptation is in very capable hands as well. It’ll be directed and written by Kelly Fremon Craig and produced by James L. Brooks.
The upcoming adaptation of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is a big move on Blume’s part. Though the beloved author has written dozens of books over the course of her career, she seldom rarely gives Hollywood the go-ahead to turn her tales into films.
In fact, of all the titles she’s released, only two have ever been adapted for the big screen: Forever, which was adapted into a TV movie in 1978, and 2012’s Tiger Eyes.
Apart from being a huge fan of the source material, Fremon Craig seems like the perfect person for the job.
Fremon Craig made her directorial debut in 2016 with The Edge of Seventeen — a coming-of-age drama she helmed and write which starred Hailee Steinfeld.
It also helps that she’s got Blume’s stamp of approval.
In an interview with Deadline, who was first to report the news, Fremon Craig recalled the huge compliment Blume gave her after she and Brooks got the go-ahead for their adaptation.
“I got the greatest email from Judy where she said if someone were to make a film of one of her books, she hoped it would have the same tone and feeling that The Edge of Seventeen had,” Fremon Craig told Deadline. “It’s maybe the greatest compliment I’ve ever gotten because she has always been a North star for me a sa writer.”
