In fairness, we’d all be horribly disappointed if any actor didn’t think a Doctor Who filming was magical. Nonetheless, Jessica Raine, found her Doctor Who experience unlike anything she had ever done before.
Jessica Raine is probably best known for her work on the new BBC drama Call the Midwife in which she is pictured above. Call the Midwife is about to start its second season and, later this year Raines will be in the Doctor Who episode currently entitled Phantoms of the Hex.
Her episode is the one that Steven Moffat has described as “a proper ghost story” and co-stars veteran U.K. actor Dougray Scott. Scott has confirmed that he plays a professor in the episode. It would seem to be a period piece likely set in the 1920’s – 1950’s judging from the costuming. The episode was originally entitled Hider in the House, though it is possible another title change could be in the offing.
In speaking with the Radio Times, Raines stated:
On Doctor Who it was all mind machines and strobe lighting. But it was a magical experience and something I was very happy to do. It’s a very different character and genre [from Call the Midwife] you have to throw yourself into it and take it very seriously.
I hadn’t realised what an institution Doctor Who is. I got offered the part and didn’t think that much about it.Then you go on set and you see this blue police telephone box, and suddenly the weight of what you’re doing hits home.
Several images are available from the teaser and a post on lighting designer Director of Photography Mike Southorn’s website seen below. Southorn was particularly pleased that he lit the scene below using only candles.
From the teaser there are several images from the episode that include the ghost itself, Dougray Scott with a modern looking Jenna-Louise Coleman, and in fact Jessica Raine herself screaming her head off in a blink and you miss it moment at the .23 mark.
Are you a Call the Midwife fan? How do you think Raines will do on Doctor Who?
