Luckily, J.J. Abrams’ post-Star Wars space epic won’t have to compete with, well, Star Wars.
J.J. Abrams is producing a new space title, which has been in production at Bad Robot since 2012. Nigerian-American Julius Onah is directing, with a script by Oren Uziel.
God Particle, amazingly, is not an adaptation, but an original idea. According to Variety, the story “centers on a team of astronauts on a space station making a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival.”
The God Particle, or Higgs boson, is a well-known conundrum in the field of particle physics. The tiny particle signifies the existence of the “Higgs field,” described by Live Science as, “an invisible energy field present throughout the universe that imbues other particles with mass.”
From Wikipedia:
The presence of this field, now believed to be confirmed, explains why some fundamental particles have mass when, based on the symmetries controlling their interactions, they should be massless. The existence of the Higgs field would also resolve several other long-standing puzzles, such as the reason for the weak force’s extremely short range.
Some physicists, including Stephen Hawkins, believe that the God Particle could wipe out the entire universe. Very likely, this movie will tackle how the astronauts on the space station deal with the impending apocalypse (unipocalypse?).
But will they be able to save the universe from total annihilation? Won’t be nowhere left to run! It’s gonna be great.
The Bad Robot production God Particle hits cinemas on February 24, 2017. Meanwhile, the Abrams produced 10 Cloverfield Lane — a sorta, kinda Cloverfield follow-up — will hit theaters this March. In light of Cloverfield Lane, it’ll be interesting to see if God Particle is actually what they’re saying it is.
