Hypable’s Monthly Movie Preview is here to satisfy your movie needs by highlighting which films we think YOU should see each weekend in the month of October.
Here are our picks for the best opener each weekend:
October 7
1911
Dirty Girl
The Ides of March
Real Steel
Our Reasoning:
Of all the films opening over the weekend, The Ides of March boasts the best credentials. Directed by George Clooney, and starring an all-star cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel-Wood, and Clooney himself that alone should have you hooked. If not, the timely manner of the plot which tells the story of the frantic last days of the Ohio presidential primary, and its excellent reviews out of the Toronto International Film Festival should do the trick!
October 14
The Big Year
Fireflies in the Garden
Footloose
The Skin I Live In
Texas Killing Fields
The Thing
Trespass
Our Reasoning:
While several films open over the weekend, The Skin I Live In particularly stands out to us. From the acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, who has made consistently excellent films for over thirty years, comes this suspenseful arthouse about a man who attempts to create a “new skin” for human beings, after his wife is burned in a car crash. Sound creepy enough for you? Whats more Antonio Banderas is the lead in this one, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival to generous reviews.
October 21
Johnny English Reborn
Le Havre
Margin Call
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Oranges and Sunshine
Paranormal Activity 3
Red State
The Three Musketeers
Our Reasoning:
This week might be the hardest to pick, which basically means a double or triple feature may be in order! But as we have to pick one, we’ll take Martha Marcy May Marlene. This Sundance-baby looks to be the perfect combination of a fantastic psychological thriller filled with powerful performances and a chilling premise. Plus, John Hawkes will look to win the Oscar he so deserved last year for his performance in Winter’s Bone. What’s more? A 100% Rotten Tomatoes score can’t hurt!
October 28
13
Anonymous
The Double
In Time
Like Crazy
Puss in Boots
The Rum Diary
Sleeping Beauty
Our Reasoning:
It looks to be like a good few weeks for Sundance-alums, as we are liking Like Crazy to close out October. Not only did it win the coveted Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, but it features three fantastic young talents in Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, and Jennifer Lawrence. Not only that, but the film has been described as “driv[ing] complexity,” “beautifully acted,” and “exquisit” three qualities that are rare to come by for most romantic films these days.
There you have it. Are there any films we missed that you’re looking forward to over October?
