We’re back! The holiday season is behind us, and now we look forward as winter trudges on and our favorite TV shows return with more Hypable Honors worthy performances.
As our favorite shows slowly, but surely trickle back onto the schedule, we are finally ready to start awarding our favorite performances again. 2014 brought us some truly amazing work, and we look forward to seeing even more remarkable performances in 2015.
This week’s honorees come from a comic book adaptation and a sci-fi drama, and they couldn’t be more worthy. One character is fighting to survive a brutal reality, while the other exists in a world we couldn’t be more grateful isn’t our reality. Check out this week’s selections for Hypable Honors and let us know who you think had the best performances of the week in the comments below.
Hypable Honors
Show: ‘Constantine’
Actor: Matt Ryan
Matt Ryan’s portrayal of occult detective John Constantine has been a joy to watch week on week, as he breezes through NBC’s Hellblazer adaption equal parts unrepentant asshole and anti-hero. He’s captured the John from the pages of the comic in every nuance of his performance, but none so much as during “The Saint of Last Resorts Pt. 2.”
Taking the demon Pazuzu into his body, we watch as John fights against being possessed completely, and Matt Ryan really sold the back-and-forth struggle with ease. We were riveted at the edge of our seats at his performance — both terrified of and for his character. His relationship with Anne-Marie tugged painfully at our heartstrings, and his struggles with Manny (his not-quite guardian angel) was like a punch in the gut. We can’t wait to see what the writers throw at the character next, and know that whatever it is, Matt will perform the hell out of it. Pun definitely intended.
Show: ‘The 100’
Actor: Eliza Taylor
Clarke has undergone some serious transformation so far in The 100 season 2, most notably in this week’s episode, “Remember Me.” When we last saw Clarke and the other survivors of the Arc’s return to Earth, they were watching in horror as Clarke drove a knife into Finn’s stomach, ending his life and saving him from a bloody painful death at the hands of the Grounders.
Not only did Clarke have to continue moving forward with the alliance from there, but she watched as she was thwarted time and time again, in addition to trying to keep her own emotions over the loss of a boy she loved. Eliza Taylor did some truly remarkable work in this episode, showing Clarke’s transition from the hopeful girl we have been cheering on since she stepped off the drop ship in season 1, to the stern and guarded leader willing to risk the only person she can trust to save her friends from Mount Weather.
Eliza had a lot of things going on in this episode with Clarke, and she somehow managed to harness the pain and frustration that Clarke is feeling and turn it into an absolutely spectacular performance. We are eager to see what happens when Bellamy goes to Mount Weather, and how Clarke continues to deal with the increasingly heavy load being heaped upon her shoulders.
