HTGAWM has put Annalise Keating through everything under the sun, and she deserves to find love at the end of her journey.
After five seasons of helping everyone get away with murder, it’s a miracle that Annalise Keating is still standing. She’s lived through her husband’s affair and murder, getting shot, going to jail, getting fired, getting sober, and countless other things on How to Get Away With Murder.
It’s no secret that Annalise hasn’t always waltzed through these events gracefully. She’s stumbled, falling at times, barely able to crawl and claw through on her hands and knees. It definitely hasn’t been easy, but she’s survived it, and she’s gotten everyone else near the finish line on her back.
In spite of the odds, Annalise has kind of been killing it lately. She accomplished her dream of taking a class action lawsuit to the Supreme Court and winning, she’s more of an icon in the classroom than ever, and she’s making bank on her own terms (mostly) at Caplan & Gold while she continues to fight for her class action clients.
Also, no matter what’s going on in HTGAWM, it seems like everyone is in love with Annalise Keating. She’s never had any shortage of suitors. However, while she’s often entertained their sexual advances, her heart has, for the most part, remained hard.
While many HTGAWM characters have been enamored by Annalise’s power, she hasn’t been able to fully open herself up to anyone since Sam’s betrayal and subsequent death.
In the How to Get Away With Murder season 6 premiere, we saw as Annalise began to tackle some of her internal demons at rehab. Yes, she’s been attending AA meetings, and her external life is really coming together, but there are still years of pain that Annalise needs to work through.
Among the most significant breakthroughs that Annalise made at the end of her extremely short stint in rehab, was admitting that she deserves to be loved. Although she has plenty of work left to do, that’s a fantastic start in moving toward something, rather than continuing to run from her past.
Sure, romantic love doesn’t have to be the end of everyone’s story. There is plenty of joy and fulfillment to be found outside of it. However, I do believe that it would be a great and fitting end to Annalise’s story on HTGAWM.
Annalise has always been fulfilled in the other areas of her life. She’s independently wealthy, extremely successful, and has a loyal team of people around here. Even though she didn’t seem to have many friends at the beginning of HTGAWM, her obvious charm and charisma would lead us to believe that she’d have no trouble making them.
What she has had trouble with, is intimacy. Even in her close relationships, she has trouble letting people in, fearing that anything she says or does will be used against her, or that she, herself, is simply being used. She’s been hurt, betrayed, left, and everything in between. Her issues with trust and loneliness are central to her struggles. Now that she’s begun to dealt with her own demons, it’s only fitting that her story would lead her to find the intimacy that she’s been avoiding.
Now, if Annalise is to find love, the next question is, with whom?
Will it be one of the many available options on HTGAWM, already? Or, will somebody new come into the picture in the final season.
Our vote is for Annalise to find a new connection with somebody that’s already on the show. The final season seems too late to introduce a new character for such an important role, and there are so many great options, as it is.
Unfortunately, Emmett is no longer an option, even though he had made himself an option in a big way in HTGAWM season 5. Obviously, any hopes of Annalise and Sam reuniting have also been dashed, long ago.
Of course, there’s Nate. Annalise and Nate have been hooking up since before HTGAWM premiere, while Nate was still married. Nate has been so good to Annalise over the years, and Annalise has…begun to treat him better. Annalise’s mother is definitely on Team Nathaniel, but does that mean they should end up together?
In HTGAWM season 6, Nate is on a darker path than ever before. He’s been a fairly steady character throughout the series, but his father’s death and Miller’s murder still have him reeling. Unfortunately, we don’t see him getting back to form in time for a reunion between him and Annalise to be a healthy conclusion, for either of them.
Then, there’s Eve, who Frank adorably thinks is Annalise’s “endgame.” We did learn that Eve was in a happy relationship in HTGAWM season 5, but will the door ever truly be closed between these two? Alternatively, is there too much history between them for them to make it work, now?
Of course, there’s also Bonnie. If you had told us in the first season that a romance between these two was possible, we would have kicked you out of the class. However, over the last couple seasons, things have escalated between them. It wouldn’t be at all shocking if they were to take things further. That being said, Bonnie is still dealing with Miller’s death, and Annalise is keeping a huge secret from her. We don’t seem them getting all of that figured out, unless a big time jump is involved.
The most plausible option on the table is Tegan. She obviously has great chemistry with Annalise, and they’ve already floated the idea of romance! We would absolutely love to see these two kickass women get together, except for the fact that Tegan is making herself a suspect for all the crimes.
If we do want to look at new characters, we could definitely get behind Annalise ending up with Vivian. Both of Sam’s former wives in a relationship? That just sounds like pure poetry.
Now, is this all a moot point, given the flash forward scene in the HTGAWM season 6 premiere? We don’t think so.
First of all, Annalise’s story arc still needs to reach a conclusion, whether it’s with death, or not. Her story could still end with finding love, before tragically meeting her demise. Alternatively, she could not die. Okay? It’s fake right? Right?!
Either way, we can’t wait to see how Annalise’s recovery, and romantic journey plays out in HTGAWM season 6, and we hope there’s a lot of love, in her future!
