How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Reading ‘Gone Girl’ – Kristina Lintz
I’ll admit: I’m pretty spooked by this book. I’ve seen the trailers coming out for the movie this fall, and in some strange way I am entranced by them. So, I conceded that I must read the book before I see the film and picked it up at my library. The haunting story is about a wife, Amy, who has gone missing, and her husband, Nick, who seems sweet on the surface but definitely has a suspicious demeanor. Did he kill her or did Amy have dark skeletons in her closet Nick had no idea about? This is a book that I am reading only during the day, with my door locked.
Catching up on ‘Once Upon a Time’ – Selina Wilken
When you start to fall behind on a show, suddenly the task of watching all 10+ (or however many) episodes seems insurmountable – because you know that once you start, you won’t be able to stop! And when there’s a lot of real life work to be done, it’s hard to justify an impromptu TV binge watching session. But this weekend I’m determined to finally finish the third season of Once Upon a Time, in preparation for season 4. I’ve got about five or so episodes left, and so far I’m very impressed. I’ll be honest, there came a point when I felt like the series was treading water and it became hard for me to continue watching it… but Once Upon a Time REALLY improves when you watch multiple episodes back to back, and have time to get into the storylines and character arcs. I’m really getting excited about season 4 now!
Binge-watching the second season of ‘Bates Motel’ – Danielle Zimmerman
Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time. While it’s not one of the ones I think of right away when people ask me “What’s your favorite movie?,” I would definitely consider it as such. It’s such a great psychological thriller and I can’t help but be mesmerized by Norman Bates. When I heard that A&E was coming out with a sort of prequel TV series called Bates Motel, I was a bit hesitant at first but really grew to love it. The first season was like nothing I had ever seen. I loved how the actors made the characters their own while still showing glimpses of who they’d become in the future. For some reason though, I got so behind on watching Bates Motel this past season that I didn’t even start it! So, this weekend, I will be relaxing at home and going through all of the episodes from season two that I have recorded on my DVR so I can be ready for this upcoming season!
Watching ‘Sports Night’ – Kristen Kranz
This weekend, I intend to feed my Sorkin obsession by diving headfirst into one of his beloved, but lesser known projects. Sports Night is the one part of Aaron Sorkin’s prestigious past that I’ve never been drawn to, but recently I’ve been embarrassed to call myself a fan with this gaping hole in my viewing history. That stops now. I’m an unapologetic Sorkin fangirl, and will be until the day I die, so it’s about time I do my part and check out what came before. I could maybe call this preparation for The Newsroom‘s return in November, but that’s merely a justification for the many hours that will be spent drinking in the masterful dialogue. And, bonus, I get to play a rousing game of “Name that guest star” which I already know includes Clark Gregg, Tom Cavanagh, and Janel Moloney.
Rereading ‘Harry Potter’ – Christine Cannon
My roommate has never read or seen the Harry Potter series before (completely insane, I know) so this weekend we plan on reading The Sorcerer’s Stone together. We decided on reading out loud to each other and alternating turns between chapters. In case you were wondering, yes, we will be including different voices for each character. I don’t expect us to finish the whole first book this weekend but I’m hoping we’ll start and my roommate will just want to finish it up on her own. It’s going to be surreal seeing her learn about the wizarding world for the very first time and being able to experience it along with her.
Diving into ‘Heir of Fire’ – Ariana Quiñónez
What’s not to love about a sassy assassin with a killer sense of style? I jumped on the Sarah J. Maas bandwagon earlier this year after being promised the series starred a dangerous heroine who fought with the boys, but wasn’t afraid to embrace her feminine side. I’m also always on the lookout for books that promote strong female friendships (women supporting women amidst a patriarchal society!), and I loved and appreciated that Celaena’s beautiful, brilliant BFF princess was a woman of color (#DiversityinYA!). Throne of Glass was admittedly difficult for me to get through at times because of the seemingly unnecessary love triangle, but I was promised a mind-blowing sequel and kept on truckin. Crown of Midnight exceeded every. Single. Expectation. By amping up the danger and bringing on the heartache. And though the romance of the series is definitely swoon-worthy, for me the heart of the story has always been the friendships. So be sure and chat me up if you’ll also be on a Sarah J. Maas kick this weekend — but beware of spoilers please! By Hypable fandom standards, I’m a pretty slowwww readerrrrrr.
Watching ‘Frozen’ and reading ‘The Snow Queen’ – Brittany Lovely
I have not seen Frozen in its entirety since I saw it in theaters many, many moons ago. Despite watching “Let It Go” approximately one hundred thousand times, I feel that it is time to grab some snacks, turn the AC up, and watch the film in full. Since Once Upon a Time’s first arc of season 4 will prominently feature Anna, Elsa, and the rest of the reimagined characters from the film, I want to have all references to the film locked down before I step into the Arendelle of Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz’s minds. After watching the Frozen special on ABC this week, I want to check out the origin story and read The Snow Queen fairy tale written by Hans Christian Anderson in 1844. It is one of Anderson’s longer tales and takes place across seven smaller installments. Hopefully, with all of the talk of snow and ice, I will be able to ignore the lingering summer heat outside and be ready to dive into Once Upon a Time’s season 4 premiere!
Movie marathon all by myself – Karen Rought
Since 99% of my friends live online (or, at least, several states away), I’ll be having a party for myself this Friday night. It’ll be a movie marathon for one, and the menu includes a first time viewing of D3: The Mighty Ducks, and a few terrible-movie classics like Waterworld and Tremors. If you see Natalie Fisher online, be sure to tell her how amazing a movie about giant sand worms can be. I’ll also be finishing up season 3 of The Walking Dead, where Daryl Dixon has just become a very important person in my life.
