How to Get Away with Murder is baccckkkkkkk! It’s another season of wild plot twists, murder, terrible decisions, and Annalise’s scathing one-liners.
Since the beginning, each season has always kicked off by showing fans an unbelievable murder and then working backwards to figure out several plots pulled together for that fateful moment. How to Get Away with Murder season 5 started the same way and brought in some interesting new stories for Annalise, Bonnie, Nate, Connor, and the Keating Five.
A lot of things went down last night, but these five moments were the most shocking parts of the episode.
Gabriel’s classroom behavior
How did you get here, Gabriel, and what do you want? How to Get Away with Murder fans finally got to get their first taste of replacement Wes after he was mysteriously introduced in the final moments of last season’s finale.
Gabriel ended up in Annalise’s class alongside other hopefuls who want to be tortured by her tough teaching and impossible workload.
While working through her arduous tests to earn a spot in the class, he passionately spoke up about prison reform and shocked everyone, including Annalise, by saying that she didn’t take her supreme court case far enough.
He also got a little too heated when he talked about how a person is changed after murdering someone (looking at you Keating kiddos) and even brings up her dead spouse. Inappropriate much?
But, he is even more unsettling when he ends his emotional appeal by saying he was just putting on a show for a win.
The whole scene proves a few things. First, it’s interesting that he chose this particular subject. Sure, he was inspired by Annalise’s supreme court victory, but it hits a little too close to home for our crew.
Gabriel thinks a little too much like Annalise… almost to the point where I am reconsidering the theory about him somehow being related to her. And, he obviously knows more about her life (and possibly the Keating Four) than he should as the new guy.
No wonder Frank is doing criminal background checks and a little light stalking to keep tabs on Gabriel.
Frank’s Proposal
Oh Frank… you are the strangest person on this show. Sometimes you are super clutch and one step ahead of everyone, like in this Gabriel situation.
Other times, you are an idiot. For some reason, Frank still really wants to do the family thing with Laurel, but she’s clearly using him for a warm bed, shelter, and a babysitter.
Laurel approached him with the “it’s not you, it’s me” line so she could move out and he responded with a creepy and forceful marriage proposal. I knew he had it bad for Laurel, but I was not ready for this impromptu moment.
How long has he had this ring? And, does he really think they can have a “normal” life after all of this mess? There are so many Flaurel questions that need answers.
She must have some kind of magic over men that I don’t want to have nor understand. It’s sweet to see him helping out with Christopher and wanting to be a better man (maybe), but this ain’t in chief.
She will probably continue to send mixed signals, but Laurel doesn’t love you, man. Let it go and be a good godfather to Christopher.
Asher’s in the cold
Life comes at you fast. Gabriel may be incredibly shady, but he did enough work to push Asher out of a class spot that he probably expected to be given to him.
Honestly, Asher has never really been a stellar part of this equation, but I was still expecting him to be in class with everyone else. But, I can’t disagree with Annalise’s decision because Asher is a hot privileged mess.
He selected his immigration topic solely to annoy Michaela and is still walking around salty as an ocean over everything. And, he wasn’t included in the new home situation with Connor, Oliver, Laurel, and Michaela. Ouch.
It’s cold shoulders all around for the How to Get Away with Murder resident clown. Like Annalise said, he needs to take time to get himself together and perhaps find a more compelling story arc this season.
Murda Bonnie is back?
Bonnie can’t seem to keep her smothering hands to herself. The biggest OMG moment in this episode was obviously the mystery murder that takes place sometime during Coliver’s wedding.
As usual, Frank is privy to what went down, but clips of the scene give a disturbing preview into this season’s big mystery outside of Gabriel. An unknown person is bleeding profusely in the snow while baby Christopher cries nearby.
Bonnie approaches the dying person and puts her hands over their face to presumably take them out of their misery. She doesn’t seem emotionally distraught about this situation and she’s no saint, so murder Bonnie might be back.
As the season goes on, we will likely see more people at the wedding and narrow it down to see who Bonnie took out.
Bonnie’s child IS alive
The fan theory that Gabriel is Bonnie’s son just became much more likely. With a little help from Bonnie’s lipstick on a coffee cup and some DNA evidence in a file, Frank discovered that Bonnie is the mother of a son.
So, it is confirmed that her child is indeed alive. But, it seems too obvious for Gabriel to be her son. What if it’s an elaborate ruse to throw us off from the real truth?
If Gabriel knows who Bonnie is, then why is he sliding into Annalise’s life? If Frank knows this, then why doesn’t he want to share it with Annalise? Who the heck is Frank talking to anyway?!
There are a lot of questions that will keep us guessing for many episodes to come.
How to Get Away with Murder has reeled us back in for another wild ride. And, we will be there to piece together this elaborate puzzle of secrets and deception.
